Veggie Galaxy Now Open!

Veggie Galaxy, a “contemporary vegetarian diner and bakery“, recently opened in Central Square and has been a monstrous success!

The sister restaurant to Veggie Planet in Harvard Square, Veggie Galaxy counteracts its sister’s pizza lovin’ with some good old fashioned diner fun. I was ecstatic to receive an invitation for a preview dinner prior to its grand opening. After originally having been told that each item for the preview would cost $5, we found out at the door that our entire meal would be $5 due to unexpectedly high attendance. Price was sans wine and beer. Side note: They serve wine and beer! How else to repay this generously scrumptious windfall than to go Supermarket Spree with the menu!

Veggie Galaxy offers all of the tried and true diner favorites including omelets, breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, french toast, and an eclectic array of sides. Completing the scene, they bestow upon us a lunch and dinner menu of reubens, clubs, soups, burgers, hearty entrees, and salads, too. The entire menu is vegetarian while most dishes are or can be made vegan. That spinning display case of desserts? Don’t worry. 100% vegan! Before your carnivore friends roll their eyes, tell them about the frappes and that should seal the deal. This place has had no problem reeling in a crowd from day one so be sure to bring the whole crew with you. Gluten free folks, fret not – your day of GF rolls etc is on its way. Keep posted!

One of the most exciting things to happen since vegan marshmallows? No. Way better. See the proof in their menu.

And after much deliberation, what did I decide on?

I opted for French Toast topped with mixed berries and lemon coconut whipped cream. These baguette-style slices did not disappoint in the texture or taste departments. For those who are sticklers for vegan replicas of non-vegan food, here you have it. The berries and cream were an absolutely perfect compliment as the cream had a sweet zest that bridged the gap between the flavors of the toast and the tart berries.

I was also looking to try something  on the other side of the diner breakfast food spectrum. Zero complaints on the chorizo and vegetable potato hash other than the faux chorizo needing a bit more life and less chew-factor, but the vegetables were seasoned perfectly. Throwing on two very unexpectedly flavorful tofu eggs (with a pancake-like consistency) rounded off the meal. The “eggs” added a bit of a middle eastern feel to the dish.

Veggie Galaxy’s decor is a modernized take on the traditional diner. Its simple yet retro feel parallels the food’s dynamic with these time-honored comfort foods taking on a new day’s conscience.

Truthiest statement: I’ll be going back to try every single (vegan) thing on the menu!
